Hello Everyone,
Homework:
We will have a "Celebration of Learning " for Math (AKA quiz/assessment) on Thursday, Nov 30th. The homework this week is designed to prepare students for what to expect:
Below are the expectations we are celebrating :)
- represent, compare, and order decimal numbers to 0.001
– demonstrate an understanding of place value in whole numbers and decimal numbers to 0.001
-add and subtract decimal numbers to thousandths
-identify composite numbers and prime numbers, and explain the relationship between them
Homework is posted on Hapara Workspace
Math:
This week we began Algebra:
We started by looking into what does it mean to be Numerate and looked at this quote from National Numeracy:
"Being numerate means having the confidence and skill to use numbers and mathematical approaches in all aspects of life - at work, in practical everyday activities at home and beyond, as consumers, in managing our finances, as parents helping our children learn, as patients making sense of health information, as citizens understanding the world about us.
Numeracy complements literacy and is sometimes called ‘mathematical literacy’. Both skills are needed in order to function fully in modern life."
To highlight the importance of Numeracy the following video was shared, which is a recorded call between a Verizon Telephone Customer and staff. It highlights the importance of being mathematically literate.
From there, students were posed with the question What is equality? A great discussion was had and many links to the word equality were made to the real world ( lots of connections to our recent read aloud Iqbal, and our present inquiry into Food Insecurity). I asked them to then think Mathematically about what would equality mean and then we looked at the following definition.
In mathematics, equality is a relationship between two quantities.
We did a "pre-assessment" to see where we are as learners around the concept of Equality and from there we will move each learners understanding further. We investigated the concept of Algebra through a fun puzzle came called Arithmagons.
Literacy
We are creating persuasive texts about topics we are passionate about and going through the process of writing. We are at the beginning stages of planning and researching facts and ideas to support our persuasive arguments. Students have chosen topics they feel are important to them, like persuading people that Cheerleading is, in fact, a sport, that children should be active after a concussion, that female athletes should be paid as much as males, that the price of sporting equipment and coaching should be more affordable so more children can access sport outside of school.
As a whole group, we are inquiring into Food Insecurity and learning many alarming facts about this ongoing crisis in Canada. We have talked about using credible resources ( ie Wikipedia vs Huffington Post newspaper) to back up our arguments and are doing a shared piece of persuasive writing around our Food Inequality in Canada, to help model the format of a persuasive piece and some of the strategies good writers use to persuade the reader. Below are some are some resources we agreed were credible for our argument.
Food Insecurity: University of Toronto
5 Things to Know about Food Insecurity In Canada: Huffington Post
Food Security: Government of Canada
This past week was Bully Awareness week and we took the following pledge daily as a class. It inspired some class members to write a script to perform a "social experiment" on the yard ( with Mr. Kelly's approval of course), to help highlight the importance of standing up to bullying and saying something.
Here was our pledge: As a student at St. Philip Catholic, I promise to respect and to treat with kindness all other students attending this school. I will not purposefully tease, annoy, exclude, hit, kick, or push other students. I will not say unkind or untrue things about other students. I will not laugh at them or say hurtful things about them or to them. I pledge to STAND UP to bullying! If I see another student being mean or hurtful to any student in the school I will do the right thing and ask them to STOP!
