Another active few weeks in our Gr 6 learning space. We are really in a groove now with our routines and comfort level. Our environment is an open and safe one where students are really starting to take academic risks and supporting one another through our learning journeys; “We learn with and from each other” is our motto!
Report cards are coming home this week. Please review with your child and celebrate all the great learning that has taken place this term. If you should have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out or arrange to meet; parent-teacher interviews, if needed, will be conducted on Thursday the 22nd.
I will be away Tuesday- Friday of this week. Please rest assured students learning will continue to be moving forward in my absence.
Math
We have been working hard on the challenge of metric conversion and have read about the real-life implications of what may happen if we don't have this needed skill! Check out the shared reading we reviewed in class about some of the real-life implications when a conversion isn't accurate: Real Life
Students have researched and generated ways to help them with the process. They have come to discover the metric system is all based on multiples of ten and depending on whether our unit is getting bigger or smaller we have to divide /multiply- it’s a tricky concept as many have noted the use of the operation almost seem “opposite” to what they are used to. Multiply usually means a number is getting bigger, which it is when we convert units but we way BIGGER unit to a SMALLER unit and so it’s easy to think division. Students have grasped the concept that when we convert big to small units there need to be MORE (multiply) of the unit and when going from smaller to bigger there needs to be LESS (division). Each student is finding their own way of converting that makes sense to them, yet proves accurate when they do the conversion!

We will be moving towards deepening our understanding of Number Sense as we dive into order of operations, inquiring into the BEDMAS rule! When you have math problems that require the use of different operations (multiplication, division, exponents, brackets, subtraction, addition) order is necessary!
Literacy
Students are actively engaged in their Write-On assignments. They each have selected a form of writing that interests them and that they wish to take through the writing process (narrative, informative, descriptive, recount etc). Students have 1 month to work through the process and produce a published piece of writing that meets the agreed-upon criteria for their particular form of writing. Most have moved on from the prewriting stage and are heavily into the draft stage. Students are really passionate about the areas of writing they have chosen! There are stories about Bat Man, Comics, recounts of sporting events and fantasy stories about space creatures! It will be an amazing collection of Literature when they are complete!

| Engaged Writers! |
Mr. Fresque joined us this week as the students presented to Ms. White to gain her approval for our Entrepreneurial Adventure (EA) project. The students were nervous but exemplified the 3 Ps- Professional, Polite and Prepared! They not only gained Ms. White's approval they also got a few tears, as she was so moved about what they have done so far and how well they did with their presentation. Students who did not present this round will get an opportunity to be part of the update process to Ms. White; as we are keeping her in the loop with our project. Please see a copy of the presentation on the right-hand side panel of the blog.
