Week in Review & Upcoming

Last week in Math we learned about Transformations: rotations, reflections, and translations. We used different tools to help us "see" the transformations. We will be moving towards exploring angles, constructing/ measuring them and classifying them as acute, right, obtuse, or straight angles. From there we will move into measurement as we look at the area and volume of 3d shapes.

Literacy we continue to create different forms of poetry and through our EA project, we are working on some media literacy as we prep our video sales pitches that will accompany our business letters. Mr. Fresque was very impressed with the quality of the student's business letters :)
This past week as well, Mr. Fresque shared the job description and skill set required to be the CFO- Chief Financial Officer of our business EDF ( Everyone Deserves Food). Those students who are interested in the position are to submit a one paragraph resume on Thursday that will be reviewed by Mr. Fresque. 2 students will be chosen for the position.

We have had some "new friends" in the class the past few weeks and will be with us a few more.
We hope they are out and ready to play during Education Week when we have our Open House.

Cool opportunity for all you football fans.  The Ottawa Redblacks have an awesome reading incentive program happening. Please check HERE for more information. You can earn yourself 2 free tickets to the May 31st pre-season game. Thank you, Mr. Theobald, for sharing the info with St. Philip staff.

Week In Review and Upcoming

Playin battleship on a Cartesian coordinate plane.
Last week we explored the Cartesian coordinate plane. In grade 6 we are responsible for plotting points on the 1st quadrant ( ask your child to show you where that is). We discovered the x and y-axis are really just number lines that intersect on a perpendicular. Lots of great math talk occurred during our games of Battleship!

In Literacy, we have begun composing our own poems and are challenging ourselves to try different forms using figurative language!

A permission letter was sent home regarding our upcoming field trip to Sacred Heart on May 1st. Please sign and return the permission form by Thursday, April 26th. Remember Friday is a PD day so Thursday is the last day before our trip. Students without signed permission will remain at school and continue their learning in other classrooms for the morning. If you have lost your copy please feel free to print one by clicking  HERE

This week in Math we look towards transformation (translation, reflections, and rotations) of shapes and in Literacy work on letter writing. After consulting with Ms. White about the possibility of sponsorship as a way to raise funds for our EA bookmark project, she suggested we compose and send letters to local businesses. So we are taking what we created in our sales pitch and transforming them into letters, as we explore the characteristics of a business letter.

Monday presenter Paul Davis will speak with the Jr students about Social Networking and Online safety. In the evening parent council is hosting a parent presentation by Mr. Davis at 630 pm in the gym. All are welcome to join- please see school website for more details:

Week In Review and Upcoming

In Math and Language, we continue on our learning journeys of Geometry and poetry.

Over the past weeks, we have had Mz. Duncker and Mr. Fresque into help us with our business adventure. We consulted with Mz. Duncker and she took us on as "clients". This week she forwarded us the results of our consultation meeting, where she took the student's original artwork and designs for our bookmarks and made them digital and added the backgrounds the students visualized.
We can't yet reveal the whole products as we are still working on many factors, but have a glimpse of our work in progress so far.
Top is original artwork, bottom after Mz. Duncker's consult
The students were amazed and thrilled with the results from Ms. Duncker's efforts and they are excitedly now working on the marketing end of things. This weeks task from Mr. Fresque is to develop a "sales pitch" to gain potential sponsorship. With Mr. Fresque the students' role- played what a sales pitch might look and sound like. From this, we developed the criteria for what should be a part of our bookmark sales pitch (see below).

Students will draft their own this week based on the criteria and share them with Mr. Fresque on Friday for his feedback. Then as a class, we will co-write/develop one that will be standard for us as we move forward. As well, next week we will invite Ms. White in again to update her on our progress.

On Monday, Sacred Heart staff will visit the Gr 6 students at St. Philip to share a little about what to expect next year and answer any questions the students may have. We are off to visit Sacred Heart May 1st, and the permission forms for that trip will be coming in the next week or two.

This week we also celebrate Earth Week- please see the initiatives below:

Also, please check out the school webpage about the upcoming presenter Paul Davis. You can order your FREE tickets here
