Weeks In Review and Upcoming

Hello!
Happy Father's Day to all Dads!

Lots have been going on since the wrap up of EQAO.
We had Fun Fair, Jump Rope for Heart, and enjoyed the Talent Show!
In the class, students have been busy exploring our new membership for the online app called Book Creator and bringing their writing pieces to life. Students are working on independent pieces as well as collaborative writing pieces.
We had a great teleconference from one of the Board of Directors for the Food First Foundation charity where our funds from our EA project will be going. Students hosted the call and enjoyed a presentation about all the great thing this organization is doing to help eliminate Food Insecurity in the North.

Monday we will have our final wrap up with Mr. Fresque ( there may be a nut free treat to help celebrate :). We will implement the last R of our  3 Rs- Review, Rise and Reflect, and look back at how our adventure went and celebrate our success! The final donation amount will be shared with the class tomorrow from our CFOs

The Leaving Ceremony is this Friday for students- info went home about that a while back and I will link it here again for reference (Leaving Ceremony). This week we also have a great field trip happening. Jr students are visiting Vincent Massey Park to celebrate National Indigenous Day on the 21st. The next few weeks will go fast and there is much on the go for the Gr 6s. Watch your Remind Updates to help keep you in the loop!

Week In Review and Upcoming

As usual, we have been busy, busy, busy!
Thanks to all who could make it out to the Open House. Students were proud to share their learning space with so many visitors! Thanks to the over 100 people who participated in our Market Research survey. We used the results to help determine some next steps in our EA project.

In Math, we've studied angles, the area of rectangles, triangle, and parallelograms and then looked at the surface area and the volume of 3D shapes.

We determined the formulas for rectangular and triangular prisms and found this Math Antics video really helpful to visualize the concept.

In Literacy we have been reviewing Comprehensions Strategies we have explored this year
Making Inferences:
Who is speaking in this text?  How do you know?
How would you describe the setting?
What is the story really about?
What is the author really trying to say?
What was the author’s feeling about the topic?  How do you know?
Making Connections:
Think about what you already know about__________ to help you understand the text.
Does this story make you think of your own life?
What do you already know about this topic?
How did the text make you feel?  Why?
How does this text remind you of other texts you have read?
Synthesizing:
What is the author’s message?
What have you learned about this topic by reading this material?
Has your understanding of the topic changed?
What supporting details did the author give that changed your thinking?
Main Idea:
Retell about the story in a paragraph.
What was the important information in the story?
Can you summarize it all in a few sentences?
What is something that happened in the story that you think is important?

Our EA project is steadily moving forward. Student representatives have reached out to Staples to secure pricing and even a discount for our project. Students participated in a conference call with a Staples manager and secured a price and timeline for us. We have mailed out our sponsorship letters and have heard back from a few companies. With donations and sponsorships so far we have collected over $200 without selling a single bookmark! So we are pretty excited about our progress to date and anticipate good sales when we bring our product to market in June.
Conference Call with Staples

Week In Review & Upcoming

In Math this week we reviewed the classification (naming/identifying characteristics) of angles and explored the protractor and how we can use it to construct and measure angles. We will move into measurement as we look at the area and volume of 3D shapes.

In Language, we wrapped up our study of poetry and are working fast and furiously on our EA project to help launch the sales of our bookmarks. Some students are working on video scripts, some on letters to business owners. While others are developing market research questions, fine-tuning their websites, developing a logo or creating business resumes applying for our CFO Chief Financial officer position for our business E.D.F (Everyone Deserves Food). Please during Open House next Tuesday take a moment to interact with the products they are making (market research/letters etc) and have a look at our bookmark prototypes.

Mr Fresque was in on Thursday and we conducted interviews for the CFO position. We had 5 worthy candidates for the position and all parties went through the interview experience with Mr Fresque and myself as the interviewers. These risk-taking students did their interviews in front of al the E.D.F. members ( ie our class :). Students were enthralled with the experience and both those that partook and those that observed really found the experience beneficial. The students reflected that they now feel more prepared to go through that the process in the real world as they look for jobs in the near future.

We had an amazing tour of Sacred Heart and the students were excited, and a little nervous to be in such a big space. The messages from Sacred were great and they ended with: End your year at St. Philip on a positive note and then bring that positivity with you to Sacred in September!

Confirmation Retreat also took place this week and the students enjoyed their time and sharing their Saint projects. Our thanks to St. Philip parish and all the volunteers that organized the retreat.

Week in Review & Upcoming

Last week in Math we learned about Transformations: rotations, reflections, and translations. We used different tools to help us "see" the transformations. We will be moving towards exploring angles, constructing/ measuring them and classifying them as acute, right, obtuse, or straight angles. From there we will move into measurement as we look at the area and volume of 3d shapes.

Literacy we continue to create different forms of poetry and through our EA project, we are working on some media literacy as we prep our video sales pitches that will accompany our business letters. Mr. Fresque was very impressed with the quality of the student's business letters :)
This past week as well, Mr. Fresque shared the job description and skill set required to be the CFO- Chief Financial Officer of our business EDF ( Everyone Deserves Food). Those students who are interested in the position are to submit a one paragraph resume on Thursday that will be reviewed by Mr. Fresque. 2 students will be chosen for the position.

We have had some "new friends" in the class the past few weeks and will be with us a few more.
We hope they are out and ready to play during Education Week when we have our Open House.

Cool opportunity for all you football fans.  The Ottawa Redblacks have an awesome reading incentive program happening. Please check HERE for more information. You can earn yourself 2 free tickets to the May 31st pre-season game. Thank you, Mr. Theobald, for sharing the info with St. Philip staff.

Week In Review and Upcoming

Playin battleship on a Cartesian coordinate plane.
Last week we explored the Cartesian coordinate plane. In grade 6 we are responsible for plotting points on the 1st quadrant ( ask your child to show you where that is). We discovered the x and y-axis are really just number lines that intersect on a perpendicular. Lots of great math talk occurred during our games of Battleship!

In Literacy, we have begun composing our own poems and are challenging ourselves to try different forms using figurative language!

A permission letter was sent home regarding our upcoming field trip to Sacred Heart on May 1st. Please sign and return the permission form by Thursday, April 26th. Remember Friday is a PD day so Thursday is the last day before our trip. Students without signed permission will remain at school and continue their learning in other classrooms for the morning. If you have lost your copy please feel free to print one by clicking  HERE

This week in Math we look towards transformation (translation, reflections, and rotations) of shapes and in Literacy work on letter writing. After consulting with Ms. White about the possibility of sponsorship as a way to raise funds for our EA bookmark project, she suggested we compose and send letters to local businesses. So we are taking what we created in our sales pitch and transforming them into letters, as we explore the characteristics of a business letter.

Monday presenter Paul Davis will speak with the Jr students about Social Networking and Online safety. In the evening parent council is hosting a parent presentation by Mr. Davis at 630 pm in the gym. All are welcome to join- please see school website for more details:

Week In Review and Upcoming

In Math and Language, we continue on our learning journeys of Geometry and poetry.

Over the past weeks, we have had Mz. Duncker and Mr. Fresque into help us with our business adventure. We consulted with Mz. Duncker and she took us on as "clients". This week she forwarded us the results of our consultation meeting, where she took the student's original artwork and designs for our bookmarks and made them digital and added the backgrounds the students visualized.
We can't yet reveal the whole products as we are still working on many factors, but have a glimpse of our work in progress so far.
Top is original artwork, bottom after Mz. Duncker's consult
The students were amazed and thrilled with the results from Ms. Duncker's efforts and they are excitedly now working on the marketing end of things. This weeks task from Mr. Fresque is to develop a "sales pitch" to gain potential sponsorship. With Mr. Fresque the students' role- played what a sales pitch might look and sound like. From this, we developed the criteria for what should be a part of our bookmark sales pitch (see below).

Students will draft their own this week based on the criteria and share them with Mr. Fresque on Friday for his feedback. Then as a class, we will co-write/develop one that will be standard for us as we move forward. As well, next week we will invite Ms. White in again to update her on our progress.

On Monday, Sacred Heart staff will visit the Gr 6 students at St. Philip to share a little about what to expect next year and answer any questions the students may have. We are off to visit Sacred Heart May 1st, and the permission forms for that trip will be coming in the next week or two.

This week we also celebrate Earth Week- please see the initiatives below:

Also, please check out the school webpage about the upcoming presenter Paul Davis. You can order your FREE tickets here
